OpenHive

Full-stack social platform built to learn the Next.js App Router.

Role
Solo engineer (learning project)

Overview

A social media app with auth, posts (text, image, video, links), follows, likes, comments, saves and notifications — built with Next.js 15, Prisma and serverless Postgres.

Architecture

  1. Client

    • Next.js App Router
    • shadcn/ui
  2. Server

    • Server Actions
    • Clerk auth
    • Cloudinary media
  3. Data

    • Prisma
    • Neon Postgres

What it does

  • Clerk authentication with OAuth and email.
  • Posts with text, image, video and article links; media stored on Cloudinary.
  • Follow / unfollow, likes, comments, saved posts and an activity feed.
  • Deployed on Vercel.

Engineering decisions

  1. Server Actions instead of a separate API

Mutations run as Next.js Server Actions next to the pages that use them — a good fit for a single-client app and a way to learn the App Router model properly.

Stack

  • Next.js 15
  • TypeScript
  • Prisma
  • Neon Postgres
  • Clerk
